Great makeup starts long before the first brush stroke. It starts with the skin beneath.

Your makeup will only ever look as good as the skin underneath it. That's not a critique, it's an invitation. An invitation to invest in your skin the same way you invest in your favorite foundation or lipstick.

As a professional makeup artist and certified color analyst, I've worked on thousands of faces. And the one thing that separates a flawless finish from a frustrating one? Skincare. A consistent, thoughtful skincare routine is the single most powerful tool in your beauty kit, and the good news is, it's never too late (or too early) to start.

Much of what I'm sharing with you today comes from years of hands-on experience working with two of the beauty industry's most trusted names: Proactiv and Clinique. My time at Proactiv was truly eye-opening; it's where I learned firsthand just how young a consistent skincare regimen needs to begin, as early as ages 9 to 11. And between Proactiv and Clinique, I gained a deep appreciation for why every single step in a routine matters. Skipping steps isn't just a shortcut, it's a setback. When each step is followed with intention and consistency, the result is healthy, glowing skin that becomes the most beautiful canvas for any makeup look.

01 Cleanse — Morning & Night, Always

Washing your face twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed, is the foundation of every good skincare routine. Overnight, your skin sheds dead cells and secretes oils. In the morning, you need a clean slate. At night, cleansing removes the day's makeup, sunscreen, pollution, and bacteria that accumulate and can clog pores or accelerate aging.

This habit is so important that ideally it should begin between the ages of 9 and 11, as soon as children begin daily face washing. Building a cleansing routine early sets the stage for a lifetime of healthier skin. And please, no matter how tired you are, never, ever sleep in your makeup.

02 Know Your Skin Type

Using the right products for your skin type isn't just helpful, it's essential. Using the wrong formula can make oily skin oilier, dry skin flakier, or trigger flare-ups in sensitive or rosacea-prone skin. Know your type and shop accordingly:

03 Exfoliate — But Gently

Exfoliation removes the buildup of dead skin cells that can dull your complexion and cause makeup to sit unevenly. Aim for 1–3 times per week using a chemical exfoliant (like lactic or glycolic acid) or a gentle physical scrub. Over-exfoliating can damage the skin barrier, so less is more. Smooth, renewed skin is the ultimate primer.

04 Address Your Skin Concerns First

Before layering on your routine, treat your specific concerns. Dealing with a breakout? Apply a spot treatment with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide directly to blemishes first and let it absorb. Struggling with fine lines, wrinkles, or uneven texture? A targeted serum with retinol, peptides, or vitamin C can make a significant long-term difference.

And one golden rule: do not pick at your skin. Picking at blemishes or dry patches causes scarring, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and spreads bacteria. It's so tempting, but hands off. Let your products do the work.

05 Layer Thinnest to Thickest

The golden rule of product application: always go from the thinnest consistency to the thickest. This ensures each layer can absorb properly without being blocked by a heavier formula on top.

06 Hydrate — Day & Night

Hydration is the key to plump, supple skin. A good hyaluronic acid serum draws moisture into the skin, while your day cream seals it in and provides a smooth base for makeup. At night, switch to a richer night cream that works while you sleep to repair and replenish. Don't forget your eye cream, the delicate skin around the eyes is the first to show signs of aging and fatigue, and needs its own dedicated care both morning and evening.

07 Protect — SPF Every Single Day

If you do nothing else, wear sunscreen. UV exposure is the number one cause of premature aging, fine lines, dark spots, and skin cancer. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, applied every morning as the very last step of your skincare routine, is the most powerful anti-aging product in existence. Yes, even on cloudy days. Yes, even if you work indoors.

Building a consistent skincare routine isn't about vanity, it's about self-respect. Every age, every skin type, and every concern deserves thoughtful care. Start where you are, use what works for your skin, and be patient. Healthy skin is a journey, and every day you show up for it is a day your future self will thank you for.

Your makeup will always look better, last longer, and feel more comfortable on skin that's been nourished and protected. Because at the end of the day, great beauty starts from within, and from a really good skincare routine.
